Dear colleagues:
The 11th congress of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICME-11) is taking place next July in Monterrey (Mexico). One of the official activities of ICME-11 is to present a survey on the influence of results from mathematics education research on students' learning of mathematics. This survey is being prepared by an international team with members from Chile, Italy, Malaysia, Spain, and USA.
Mathematics teachers are a keystone in the relationship between research and students. For this reason, we would like to know the opinion of as many mathematics teachers from all over the world as possible on this issue, and to get some data about their professional activity as teacher of mathematics. This information will help us to appraise more accurately and rigorously the real scope of the influence of mathematics education research on the activity of teachers of mathematics and, therefore, on students' learning of mathematics.
For this reason, we are asking you to collaborate with the ICME-11 Survey Team 3 by devoting a few minutes to answer the questionnaire in the URL
In anticipation of ICME-11
Very exciting things have been happening. In the beginning, in 2004, during and following ICME-10 in Denmark, ICMI (see page 4) invited twenty-three members of the international community of mathematics education to constitute the International Program Committee (IPC) and embark on the quadrennial expedition called ICME, this would be the 11th edition. The Sociedad Matemática Mexicana (Mexican Mathematical Society), with the support of the Mexican Federal Governement via the Ministry of Education (SEP), had successfully bid to have ICME-11 take place in Monterrey, Mexico, in July 2008.
The International Program Committee (IPC) for ICME11 extends its warmest greetings to all readers of this First Announcement. We are pleased to inform you that planning for ICME 11 is well under way, bringing a wide array of specialists in Mathematics Education from all over the world to Monterrey (Mexico) in the Summer of 2008.
