The aims of the sharing experience group are to discuss experiences and to explore the possibilities and obstacles involved in the inclusion of a critical mathematics education perspective in the classroom. It´s our goal to create a space to share and debate experiences envolving teachers and researchers all around the world, concerning the presence of critical mathematical education in school mathematics. As a result of our work we expect to elaborate a synthesis about how topics of critical mathematics education are presented in school mathematics in a variety of countries. From that discussion we will try to summarize possibilities to the implementation of a critical mathematics education in the classroom and find ways to struggle against the several obstacles that teachers concerned with social justice face when trying to explore in the classroom situations of social and political dimensions of mathematics.
Participants should expect that the leaders give an account of their experience and ask the intervention of members of the group to jump into discussion around key issues.
This is a list of topics that we will consider:
- Brief description of the project LEARN in which we are involved, focusing the concerns and the importance of a critical mathematics education today;
- Who are we? Our double role as teachers and young researchers. The process of starting to raise questions about our role as teachers and the role of school in a society based on a market economy;
- Background sustaining our pedagogical orientation;
- What can we do? Confronting the students in the classroom with critical aspects of mathematics in society. Presenting examples of situations where mathematics appears in the world as an instrument and a language that formats reality, through models, and exploring questions about social justice. And also discussing school mathematics as a discipline that tends to normalize people, creating the needed subject for a market based society;
- Constraints and obstacles facing during the implementation of activities involving critical aspects of mathematics in society. Social, political, curricular, assessment, institutional, personal obstacles, among others;
Our target audience will be teachers and researchers concerned with the implementation of a critical mathematics education in the mathematics classroom, and in exploring the obstacles, or avenues, to innovation experienced by individual teachers who want to adopt innovative approaches to teaching.
Number of participants: 10 to 20.
